Getting the most from your asthma medications
The aim of delivery devices is to get the maximum amount of medication into your lungs with minimal side-effects. It's important to remember to:
- Care for and clean your medication devices
- Ensure that medication is left in your device. Many devices will show you exactly how much medication is left
- When using a puffer, use a spacer to minimise side-effects
- Make sure you're using your inhaler correctly. It's a good idea to have your technique regularly checked by your doctor, pharmacist or asthma educator
Asthma guidelines also recommend that the best way to use preventers is to use it consistently, not just when symptoms arise. By using a preventer every day, you will help prevent your airways from becoming inflamed in the first place. Scientific studies have shown that using your preventer in this way may help reduce the number of symptoms you experience.
